What Are We Working On?
The Fruit of the Spirit Part 1 Bible lessons for kids was released Wednesday, 3rd. So what's kickin' now?
Part 2 of Fruit of the Spirit will be released July 21 and Part 3 on August 20.
These two units will cover the 9 Fruit of the Spirit. Part 3 is actually 6 lessons and we kept it the same price. Each unit has a review week at the end. Why did we break the fruit out into 2 units? Good question. Our heart, and I believe calling, has always been to keep our material affordable to any size church. Many teachers pay for material out of their own pocket. By breaking our topics down into 5 week units it helps... $15 vs. $30 in one shot. It's that simple, that's our heart and our mission.
For October we will either do a series on "ZERO" (interesting huh?) or a series on a lifestyle of worship. Or, we may do neither! Why? Because as the time gets nearer, what sounds good to us now may not be what the Holy Spirit has in mind. We don't make random decisions, we try to be obedient as much as possible.
In October we will be releasing our Merry Kickmas package. We beta tested this at 3 churches last year and got some good feedback and input which we will use to improve it. It is about 70% complete as it stands.
We said it before but we mean it this time (LOL). Look for one title per month starting now!
Bringing Current Technology Into Your Classroom
This is the second article on the subject. See last months newsletter for Part one, click here.
As we said in part 1 - The key is to think out of the box - ask the Holy Spirit to infuse you with ideas and approaches using the things that kids use everyday. The things they are exposed to and think are cool and relevant. By doing this, we show the church is relevant and adapts... that you care enough about connecting with your kids that you are willing to part from some older, tired, and sometimes lame methods and practices. We have to be willing to adapt - not compete with the world - but look, be wise as a serpent, use what is there and coupled with God's Spirit, it will reach out and rock your kids!
Let me say something that might offend some...and that's okay. It needs said to open some ears and eyes to reach kids. My wife and I sat in a meeting maybe a year ago. We were with a group of teachers who were mostly parents too. We were discussing material used and methods for reaching middle school kids specifically. One teacher shared that she really wasn't comfortable with the curriculum because it was music based, in that it used current contemporary Christian songs in the lessons. They would play a song that kids were familiar with and basically use the song for a springboard to the lesson topic like forgiveness, grief, whatever.
The statement was made that the kids seemed to like it but the teacher was offended by the type of music. She just didn't like the music style or genre. My wife and I both had the same response; ministry isn't about you... it's about reaching the kids! It's about connecting with their world! Check yourself at the door, your likes and dislikes... and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what will open kid's hearts to God's word!
Having said that - Why not use You Tube music videos or other appropriate videos as part of your Bible lessons for kids? Again, Show kids you are willing to put in some extra time and effort to connect with them! There is a ton of stuff out there...and if you have internet access...it's free!
Listen to some Christian music on the radio, watch videos on TV or the internet... talk to your kids, find out what's hot and try to incorporate it some way in to your Bible lessons. Maybe ask your class one week what they listen to or watch... Use it - break a song or video down and ask the kids what is being said in the song. Use it as a discussion starter.
Do they agree... disagree with the words? Is it biblical? Look up scriptures to back or show how it isn't accurate. Not all songs are! Just like some old traditional hymns aren't either!
That's it for now! I hope that got some wheels turning. See ya next month!
